New research has revealed that homebuyers prefer to purchase building conversions.

The property website propertyfinder.com found that churches were the top of people's list when it came to strange converted buildings to live in.

Barns came second on the list, closely followed in third place by converted schools. In fourth place was the yuppie choice, a warehouse.

In total, 60 per cent of those asked said they would rather live in converted properties. The other 40 per cent said they would prefer to choose a purpose-built house or flat.

The director of propertyfinder.com, Nicholas Leeming, said: "Buyers want something a bit different, but also a home that is pleasant to live in and doesn't cost the earth."

But he added: "Too often developers shoehorn flats into a beautiful church to maximise their return and end up spoiling the space and creating uninspiring homes."

However, the least popular choice for prospective buyers, according to the survey, were old converted office blocks. Many respondents called them "characterless", despite being popular with young, single people.

In a separate poll by the website, estate agents also ranked churches as the most desirable property.

However, they feel they are in fact the poorest value for money and least well laid out for practical living purposes.
